Finnmark: North and East – Largest and fewest
Finnmark is situated North and East in Norway.Finnmark is situated in the extreme North East of the country. Of all the counties, it has the largest area and the fewest inhabitants. Its mainland stretches as far North as to the peninsula Kinnarodden and as far East as to the island of Hornøya i Vardø municipality. Finnmark borders on the Arctic Ocean, The Barent Sea, Finland, Russia and Troms County.

In Finnmark, Norwegian, Sami, Finnish and Russian cultures converge. Moreover, the county has, in recent years, enjoyed substantial demographic additions from other parts of the world. It is thus safe to conclude that Finnmark is an interesting multicultural county.

In Finnmark distances are huge, and public transport is well developed. You can travel by air, by sea on ships and catamarans, by bus and on good roads, which, added to various forms of information technology, make the county seem less vast. Lately, video studios have mushroomed, and lines of communication with Russia are well developed.

The largest urban areas in the county are Alta, Hammerfest, Honningsvåg, Kirkenes, Lakselv, Vardø, Vadsø, Karasjok and Kautokeino. Vadsø is the county capital and the centre of state administration.

Along the coast, employment derives from fisheries, both on and off shore. Further inland, we find agriculture and reindeer husbandry, while a large number of people, particularly women, are employed in the public sector. For the travel industry, which is of some magnitude, a major challenge will be to extend the tourist season.
